洋書を普通に読んでる人で1.5万くらい、洋書を鬼のように読みまくってる人で2.5万くらいのようです。
ところで単語の出現頻度にはZipfの法則という有名なのがあります。このグラフが分かりやすい

だいたい上位一万語あたりまで1/順位の頻度で英文に現れてます。
別のサイトにあった、Project Gutenbergの中の英単語の頻度データがこちらの赤い線。
緑の線は頻度ごとに適当に２０語抜き出して自分が知ってる割合を調べて見たもの。一万位くらいから知らないのが目立ち始めて急速に低下します。まあだいたい合計で1.5万語ってとこでしょう。以下がその単語リスト

testvocabのサイトで出る単語を出現頻度でソートしたものがこちら
一番難しい単語になると、頻度データにも出ていなくて順位が分かりませんが、だいたい３万から４万あたりの順位と思われます。さすがにこのあたりは見たことも聞いたこともない語ばかりでした。つまりパッと思いつくレベルの単語をパスワードにすると５万語程度の単語リストで破られてしまう訳で、これはアルファベット小文字４文字の組み合わせより簡単です。
